Problems such as alcohol,
tobacco and other drug abuse; violence; HIV/AIDS; suicide
and teen pregnancy present a challenge to every community
today. We provide research-based programs and strategies to
schools, coalitions and agencies in our service area.
We actively collaborate with
many partners in our service area because no one person or
program can do it alone; research has shown us that the most
effective prevention programs are comprehensive,
community-wide efforts which involve everyone – students,
parents, educators, business people and others. Each of us
has an important role to play.
Some of our collaborative
projects include:

Botvin's Life Skills Curricula |
Youth Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention Education |

Skills for Success
The Skills for Success program
began in the fall of 2003 with Lawton Public Schools as the
pilot school. SFS is based on the research based
Reconnecting Youth curriculum and is lead by a certified
teacher. The class is offered as an elective, and each
student who completes the course will receive a ½ credit
towards graduation.
The Skills for Success
Program is a comprehensive effort that utilizes multiple
community resources providing suspended and expelled
students with intensive life skills training and meaningful
activities to direct their time. This initiative helps the
students to avoid negative behavior and teaches them the
value of service to others and their community. At the same
time they attain the tools preparing them for continuing
their education.

The goal of the SICA grant is
to implement a statewide prevention network to reduce the
amount of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use (ATOD) abuse
in Oklahoma. Some of the programs or curricula used are:
2Much2Lose
2Much2Lose uses an environmental approach to reduce
the sale of alcohol to those under the age of 21. Using such
strategies as sting operations, media campaigns, training
local retailers to recognize fake identification, and
working with the Oklahoma Legislators to pass new laws that
will keep alcohol out of the hands of youth. To start
a local PU21 coalition, visit website at:www.2Much2Lose.com
SWAT- Students Working
Against Tobacco
A youth led coalition and Southwest Tobacco Free Oklahoma
Coalition (SWTFOC) is an adult led coalition. Both are
ongoing coalitions whose aim is to change community norms
surrounding tobacco use. Through collaboration with
many community partners the coalitions have been able to
change local ordinance. For example, a 24/7 No Tobacco
Policy was accepted by Lawton Public Schools, and several
restaurants in Lawton have gone smoke free.
Reconnecting Youth
Reconnecting Youth is a research based prevention program
for youth that are at risk for dropping out of school.
RY program design includes; tested school-based models for
preventing drug abuse, school dropout, depression, and
suicide behaviors among high-risk youth. The program
involves partnerships among school personnel, youth, and
parents. RY has shown significant results for Lawton Public
Schools.
Lawton-Fort Sill Community Coalition
